Pediatric Lymphedema: Building Awareness and Assistance

Published: 25 February, 2020

When most people think of lymphedema, they picture an adult. That isn’t always the case. Every year, children are also being diagnosed with lymphedema. Just as with adults, when the lymphatic system doesn’t function properly, lymph can build up in tissues and cause swelling in the arms, legs, hands and feet. Because pediatric lymphedema is rare, it can often be hard for families to find resources and the best possible treatment options for their child.

Building Awareness and Assistance for Pediatric Lymphedema

The good news is that there are some amazing resources available, and we want to spread the word! In this article, learn from two leaders who are raising awareness and advocating for children with lymphedema.

Betty Westbrook is a Certified Lymphedema Therapist in Texarkana, Texas and works in a hospital-based outpatient clinic as a Physical Therapist Assistant. Brittany Williams is the mother of Brylan, who has pediatric lymphedema, and is the founder of Brylan’s Feat Foundation. Together they are connecting parents facing the same challenges, pointing to the best courses of treatment for children with lymphedema, and providing other pediatric lymphedema resources that are available to families.
