Caring for Lymphedema Patients in a Home Health Setting with Kris Nesheim and Karen Ashforth

Published: 7 November, 2023

In this webinar, certified lymphedema therapists Kris Nesheim and Karen Ashforth offer inside tips and secrets on ways to deliver quality lymphedema care in a home setting. You’ll gain an appreciation for the freedom and creativity of this area of practice, either as a freelance professional or working as a part of an agency.

About our Speakers

Kris Nesheim, OTR/L, CLT-LANA, holds a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from the University of Florida. Kris worked in a variety of settings and she received her lymphedema certification from the Norton School of Lymphatic Therapy in 2008. Kris started her lymphedema career as an outpatient at the Elliot Health System in Manchester, NH. When it became evident that several patients could not make it into the clinic for treatments, she transitioned into providing lymphedema services full-time in the home health setting.

Kris currently works for the Granite VNA, the largest home health agency in New Hampshire. She also leads a lymphedema work group for home health therapists through the NH Home Care Association, to allow for collaboration and education among home health therapists. Kris also facilitates the Home Care clinical focus group for the National Lymphedema Network.

In 2021, Kris joined the Norton School of Lymphatic Therapy as an associate instructor.

Karen Ashforth, MS, OTR, CLT-LANA, has practiced as an occupational therapist for over 40 years. Specializing as a board-certified hand therapist led to her interest and specialization in treating lymphedema and fibrosis 20 years ago.

Karen’s passions in lymphedema practice are equipment innovation and development, treatment of underlying fibrosis and inflammation, and assessment of complex and difficult cases. She is considered an expert in the clinical use of pneumatic compression and has participated in the development of numerous devices and appliances. She has outpatient lymphedema practices at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton, California, and Dominican Rehabilitation in Santa Cruz, California, as well as a private telehealth and consulting practice.

Karen speaks frequently in academic, clinical, and professional settings and performs clinical research that she presents and publishes nationally and internationally. She is also an adjunct faculty member with the University of the Pacific in the Doctoral Physical Therapy Program.
